Moving Away to College? What you need to know

It's that time of year again when college students across the country are getting ready to move back to school. Many will cram, jam, pack, and overfill their cars until the only room left is in the glove compartment; then travel hundreds of miles scrunched sardine-like in the front seat. Before you submit to this kind of torture, there are some important questions you should ask yourself if you want to save time, energy, money and - maybe most important - your back.

Tell us what you want to move or ship:

If you have more than one of a checked item, please note the number in the Comments box.

The world of moving is complex, and choosing the wrong way to move your personal items can be expensive and painful. When deciding to use any moving service, including services provided by TSI, here are some questions you should ask yourself

  • What are your moving needs?
The type of things you are moving will determine what kind of moving service you will use. If you're only moving a few boxes, parcel service might be wise. (We recommend you contact one of the parcel carriers for whom TSI is an approved service provider. If you're moving larger boxes, TSI's shipping service is probably your best choice. Moving expensive furniture or similar large, unpacked items is best done with TSI's moving service. As a shipping and moving services broker, TSI is able to match you with the best, most cost-effective service and carrier for your needs.

  • Do you need your items moved a long distance (over 100 miles)?
The distance that you are shipping your items changes the type of service you will need drastically. If your move is under 100 miles, go with a local moving company. If your move is over 100 miles then TSI's freight shipping or moving service is your best choice.

  • Should you pack your own stuff or let the moving company do it?
To minimize your expenses, box the things you can and ship them by parcel service or freight. (But pack securely! That means multiple layers of bubble wrap or styrofoam, lots of packing tape and double boxing for especially fragile items.) TSI's moving service offers two-man inside pickup and delivery, and they'll take care of all the preparing of items. It costs a bit more but you get the convenience and security of professional packing services.

  • How much time do you have to move your items?
Different types of moving and shipping services require different amounts of time. Freight service offers next-day pickup and delivery within a week or less. Moving service takes one to two weeks for pickup and one to two weeks for delivery. If you have time constraints you'll need to choose accordingly.

  • Do you want your things insured?
Carriers are usually liable for only a portion of the value of your shipment, often as little as 10 cents per pound. Ask about insurance coverage. TSI offers coverage for damage or replacement through DSI Insurance .
After you've answered the questions above, consider your moving options and choose the one that fits the best for you. Call TSI and a shipping specialist will answer any questions and provide a price quote. Freight shipping is usually the most economical service. Items must be boxed or crated. It's one-man, curb-to-curb service, so the driver may need help and he will not pick up or deliver inside. Freight is usually limited to business or commercial shipments, but pickup can be made from a residence for an additional charge. Moving service costs slightly more than freight, but it offers two-man, inside pickup and delivery and they will prepare most items for shipment. TSI's moving service is for items that are generally too large to box or crate. It is the best for items such as furniture, large appliances, home exercise equipment, copiers, big screen TVs, etc.
